Singapore Students Clinch Record 11 Awards at International Science and Engineering Competition
Last Updated: 29 May 2025
The Singapore student delegation clinched eleven awards at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF)1 2025 – the highest number of awards won since Singapore's first participation in ISEF in 2001. The delegation of eight students competed against more than 1,700 students from over 60 countries, regions, and territories. In total, four individual projects and two team projects2 were submitted to ISEF, which was held in Columbus, Ohio, USA, from 10 to 16 May 2025.
2. Our students demonstrated inventive thinking skills by applying STEM concepts to address real-world contexts and challenges:
- Mr Ying Liqian from the NUS High School of Mathematics and Science, who has a deep interest in the Make24 brain teaser, clinched four awards with his project, which explored the game's mathematical properties for application in real-world situations. This is the highest number of awards ever won by an individual project from Singapore at the ISEF.
- Ms Felicia Tan Ee Shan and Ms Low Li Ying Amy from Raffles Institution developed a novel intelligent video analysis framework that helps computers detect hateful video content more accurately, relieving fatigue and pressure placed on human content moderators.
- Similarly, Mr Rameshkumar Dhanvine from Temasek Junior College developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) framework that improves the precision, speed, and accessibility of meta-lens design, therefore accelerating innovations in optics including augmented reality (AR) glasses, holography, and light detection and ranging (LiDAR).
3. Through the competition, our students exchanged insights with young scientists across the world, and gained valuable learning experiences. The Ministry of Education (MOE), the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), and Science Centre Singapore commend our budding young scientists for their active participation and excellent performance at this year's fair. The award-winning projects are as follows (details in Annex A):
