World Book Day 2025 Opening Ceremony and Launch of New National Chinese Reading Contest to Cultivate Love for Reading

2025年世界书香日开幕典礼暨全国中小学华文阅读乐竞赛发布会

More than 800 secondary and pre-university students participated in this year's World Book Day Opening Ceremony at Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) on Saturday, 12 April 2025. Jointly organised by the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL), National Library Board (NLB) and HCI, the event aims to promote a culture of reading among youths.

At the event, Minister of State for Education and Chairperson of the CPCLL, Ms Gan Siow Huang launched a student publication titled 《星月银河映初心》, which comprises a collection of outstanding essays written by students under the Author-in-Residence Programme1, and presented the Chinese Language Elective Programme Best Improvement Award2 to 28 secondary and pre-university students. As part of efforts to nurture a love for Chinese reading from young, the CPCLL and Association for Research on AI-assisted Language Learning will jointly organise a new National Chinese Reading Contest for primary and secondary students (全国中小学华文阅读乐竞赛). This event is also supported by local publishers and partner organisations. Registration will open from 12 April to 30 May 2025. Interested students can sign up at .

4. To mark Singapore's 60th year of independence, World Book Day 2025 will incorporate the SG60 theme of Building Our Singapore Together, as we celebrate our history, encourage exploration and imagination, and build our shared future together. Renowned contemporary Chinese science fiction author Mr Chen Qiufan (陈楸帆先生) delivered a keynote address on writing in the age of AI, and Dr Liang Wern Fook (梁文福博士) spoke about interpreting xinyao (新谣). Both speakers also participated in a panel discussion moderated by local writer Dr Chua Chee Lay (蔡志礼博士).

5. Students from primary to tertiary level as well as teachers can look forward to a series of reading activities held between April and May.
